Australian Curriculum Maths Levels, Explained for Parents
School reports and parent-teacher nights are full of phrases like "working at Level 3" - usually delivered as though everyone knows exactly what Level 3 contains. Here's the translation: what each level of the Australian Curriculum (Mathematics F–10, version 2.0) actually covers across the primary years, in parent language.
First, the two things the levels don't tell you
Levels aren't year levels, exactly. Level 3 content is typically taught in Year 3, but the curriculum itself says children progress at different rates. A Year 3 child working at Level 2 in fractions and Level 4 in geometry is common - and both facts matter more than the average.
Each level has six strands. Number, Algebra, Measurement, Space, Statistics and Probability. "Working at Level 3" is really six separate statements wearing a trench coat.
Foundation (Prep)
Counting with meaning, recognising small amounts at a glance, comparing groups, simple patterns, naming shapes, and first combining-and-separating with real objects. Depth beats speed here - see our full Prep maths guide.
Level 1 (typically Year 1)
Numbers to 120, and the huge idea of place value: 14 is one ten and four ones. Adding and subtracting within 20, halves as equal parts, counting collections by grouping, telling time to the half hour, and simple data ("how many kids like dogs?").
Level 2 (typically Year 2)
Numbers to 1,000. Addition and subtraction strategies grow up - bridging ten, jump strategies. Multiplication arrives as equal groups and arrays, division as sharing. Halves, quarters and eighths; centimetres and metres; time to five minutes; chance words like "likely" and "impossible".
Level 3 (typically Year 3)
The year of multiplication facts - 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s and 10s - and adding/subtracting three-digit numbers. Unit fractions (one-third, one-fifth) placed on number lines, not just as pizza slices. Perimeter, angles as "amount of turn", and reading proper graphs. If tables are causing grief, our times tables guide is written for exactly this year.
Level 4 (typically Year 4)
All multiplication facts to 10 × 10 expected fluent by year's end. Decimals arrive (tenths and hundredths), fractions become families of equivalents (½ = 2/4 = 5/10), and division gets formal. Area in square centimetres, symmetry and transformations, and data collected over time.
Level 5 (typically Year 5)
Multi-digit multiplication, division with remainders that mean something, adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominator, percentages linking to fractions and decimals, 12- and 24-hour time, and probability as numbers rather than vibes.
Level 6 (typically Year 6)
The launchpad for high school: all four operations with fractions and decimals, ratios, integers (temperatures below zero!), order of operations, the Cartesian plane, and evaluating statistical claims - the beginnings of "is this graph lying to me?".
How to actually use this
Don't try to match your child to one level. Instead, ask which strand, which skill. A child "behind in Year 4 maths" is usually a child with two or three specific Level 2–3 gaps - often place value or fraction basics - with everything else intact.
